The first
construction on the Mont Saint Michel goes back to 708,
it acts of a sanctuary establishes in the honor of L'
bishop of Avranches, Saint Aubert. From the 10th century
the monks build an abbey there then they raise with 11th
and 12th century a Romance monastery established with
the top of the rock.
13th at the 16th century of the administrative and legal
buildings will come to supplement this place of worship.
With the wire of time and wars, the Mont Saint Michel
loses his splendour.
In 1790, this small island becomes a prison until 1863.
From 1874, it is classified historic building and of great
work of restoration are carried out.

At side of
the permanent community of the Mont Saint Michel one finds
a very important population of tourist (3.3 million per
annum) of which 850 000 go until the top, with the abbey.
For the period of high fréquentation(de May at
September) one can note the simultaneous presence of approximately
6000 people on the small island. |
